Niger has stopped mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis in 98% of endemic health districts following the likely interruption of transmission in 53 out of 54 HDs as of FY22 (October 2021 – September 2022).
Niger has no trachoma MDA planned in FY24--this is because all districts where MDA has ever been needed (62 of 72 total districts) have either reached the criteria to stop MDA (57) or are awaiting trachoma impact surveys (5 districts) to determine if any further treatment is required.
The national onchocerciasis elimination committee of Niger has determined that the country has successfully eliminated transmission following entomological and epidemiological surveys as of FY21 (October 2020 – September 2021). Niger’s government has announced elimination of OV transmission although the submitted dossier has not yet been validated by WHO.
Along with Burkina Faso and Mali, Niger has one of the longest standing schistosomiasis/soil-transmitted helminthiasis (SCH/STH) control programs in West Africa, conducting SCH/STH MDA since 2004.
Until 2024, Niger's SCH/STH control program was supported by Unlimit Health. In 2024, Act | West started to support the country program in Niger starting with SCH MDA in 18 districts. Niger has stopped STH MDA but will evaluate SCH/STH in integrated impact assessments in 13 districts in 2024.
