Guinea stopped mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis in 46% of endemic health districts in the country following the likely interruption of transmission in 11 out of 24 HDs as of December 2022.
Guinea has one last trachoma surveillance survey due, which is planned for February 2024. If the TF prevalence is <5% among children ages 1-9 years, then all formerly endemic districts will have maintained the threshold for at least two years in the absence of MDA, a requirement for elimination validation by the WHO. Guinea also began to work on its trachoma elimination dossier in October 2023.
OEM for onchocerciasis was completed in 9 districts, resulting in the need to start MDS in several districts. The country will conduct its first pre-stop MDA survey in 2024.
Guinea was one of three countries in Africa selected by the Task Force for Global Health to conduct a SCH Oversampling survey in five districts in 2024. These will be the first schistosomiasis/soil-transmitted helminthiasis (SCH/STH) impact surveys carried out in the country since the start of the SCH/STH control program in 2013.
